F&G is looking to hire a Principal Underwriting Consultant.

The role will be supporting both large case underwriting and relationship building for key distribution relationships while also building out technical underwriting needs in coordination with the Director, Technical Underwriting. This position will work large cases within the underwriting team by establishing and applying the stated guidelines. This position will also execute the expansion and routine uplift of underwriting guidelines. This role has responsiblility for building awareness with competitive details finding the balance of supporting the guidelines and expected mortality pricing. This position is expected to present to field sales groups on a periodic basis and may also become involved in other technical underwriting projects to support the success of the overall department.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and price formal life insurance applications using company specific guidelines with authority to $7,500,000
  • Mentor and review applications from other underwriters handling routine applications over large case death benefit threshold
  • Propose, develop, socialize, and/or publish new underwriting guidelines focused on maintaining or improving mortality experience while improving the Client experience
  • Work independently to meet department and organization goals
  • Develop mentorship and enhanced guidelines for the TPA underwriting staff
  • Manage a Large Case Caseload through quote, initial review, reinsurance coordaintion and approval
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with sales leaders, field sales associates, and reinsurance partners
  • Champion change following the operation’s goal to drive continuous process improvement
Experience and Education Requirements
  • AA or BA degree preferred relevant experience considered in lieu of degree
  • 7+ years of Life Underwriting experience including large cases, detailed medical impairment understanding, and alternative methods and requirements for predictive information
  • $5 million life approval limit
  • Proven track record for success with customer relationships
  • Experience with alternative requirements and underwriting data sources and tools.
  • FLMI and FALU, or CLU designations, or demonstrated current progress completing these designations.
  • Reinsurance experience preferred
  • Industry Association involvement preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated field presentation skills
  • Routinely demonstrate and mentor the use of critical thinking skills
  • Proficiency in Life Insurance Underwriting, including medical risk assessment, financial risk assessment, and reinsurance risk management
  • Skilled in Large Case Underwriting (greater than $10,000,000)
  • Proficient in assessing post issue data in consideration of rescinding coverage
  • Understands how respective coverage area operates within the context of the industry.
  • Quickly processes information and develops solutions in real-time, with practical, measurable business benefits.
  • Proactively identifies opportunities to serve the customer.
  • Works with other colleagues and leaders deliver New Business and Underwriting strategy.
  • Reads a wide range of audiences and situations and quickly adjusts communication style accordingly; selects appropriate communication channel and tone to deliver tough messages.
  • Identifies opportunities to use innovative processes.
  • Seeks opportunities to cultivate relationships with established contacts in their network.
  • Provides guidance on what information to gather to achieve business objectives and how to efficiently obtain information that is not easily available.
  • Seeks challenging assignments and projects
  • Understands and demonstrates commitment to the departmental vision, strategy, change initiatives and goals.
  • Proactively identifies opportunities to improve department performance and escalates ideas to leadership.
  • Leads/participates in process improvement activities.
  • Brings technical strength in this area to support the risk assessment and pricing/rating functions needed.
  • Sets, monitors and holds accountability for priorities and goals that ensure objectives are met during the allocated time period.
  • Expected to provide regulatory subject matter expertise in area of focus.
